Islamic State seizes key Syrian air base

Fighters from the Islamic State group have taken over an airbase in northeast Syria , capturing it from government forces after fighting that cost more than 500 lives, a monitoring group and state media have said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, SOHR, a London-based rights group, said at least 346 Islamic State fighters and more than 170 government forces had been killed since Tuesday in the fight over the Tabqa base, which was captured by fighters on Sunday.

An American journalist kidnapped nearly two years ago has been freed in Syria following Qatari mediation and handed over to United Nations peacekeepers in the Golan Heights . Peter Theo Curtis was handed over to UN peacekeepers in the village of al-Rafid, Quneitra, on Sunday. Russian Defence Ministry has rejected reports which the Finnish Defence Ministry’s press service has made that a Russian warplane has allegedly transgressed the air space of that country on Saturday. “On August 23, a military transport airplane of Baltic Fleet’s sea aviation was on a planned flight from airfield Pushkin in [north-western Russia] Leningrad Region to airfield Chernyakhovsk in [Russian westernmost] Kaliningrad Region. The flight was made on the route set strictly beforehand. The warplane did not deviate from its itinerary during the flight according to air data device,” the Russian Defence Ministry’s press service and information department told reporters in comments on reports made by Finnish defence agency’s press service. “Aircraft of Russian armed forces are making flights in full compliance with all international treaties,” the press service of Russian defence agency said.

5 Ukrainian soldiers killed in last 24 hours - Security Council

The Ukrainian army has lost five servicemen in its military operation in the country’s east in the past 24 hours and another eight have been wounded, spokesman for Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Andriy Lysenko said on Sunday, reports Itar-Tass. Meanwhile, the army of the Donetsk People’s Republic has reported that self-defense fighters have destroyed over 150 Ukrainian troops, four Smerch multiple launch rocket systems, 12 Grad rocket launches, 17 tanks, over 30 combat armored vehicles and about 50 vehicles with ammunition in their counter-offensive in the last two days.

FRSC gets new spokesperson, Stella Uchegbu

(Nigeria) The Federal Road Safety Commission,  FRSC, has appointed Corps Commander Stella Uchegbu as the new Corps Public Education Officer to replace Assistant Corps Marshal Jonas Agwu, who is now Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Zone RS7 Abuja at Gwagwalada. Fighter jets attack targets in Tripoli

Unidentified war planes have attacked targets in the Libyan capital hours after fighters from the city of Misrata said they had seized the main airport from a rival fighter brigade, reports Al-Jazeera. 3 killed in Spanish police rescue helicopter crash

A Spanish police helicopter flying to rescue a mountain climber with a broken ankle crashed on Sunday, killing all three crew members on board, emergency services said. According to AFP, the helicopter's blades struck the side of a mountain close to the Picos de Europa range in the northwestern province of Leon . The aircraft then slid down the rock face, regional emergency services said in a statement.

18 migrants die in boat accident while cross Mediterranean

Eighteen bodies were found Sunday aboard an inflatable dinghy adrift off Italy , media reported, amid a new surge of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean into Europe, reports AFP . The Donetsk People’s Republic has put on display the Ukrainian army’ combat hardware destroyed by self-defense fighters, eyewitnesses said on Sunday, reports Itar-Tass. The exhibits displayed on Lenin Square in the center of Donetsk comprise multiple launch rocket systems, howitzers, infantry and airborne combat vehicles that were used by the Ukrainian army in its military operation in the country’s east and destroyed by local self-defense fighters.

Police probing attempt to shoot NSCDC boss

(Nigeria) The Police have begun investigation into the allegation that one policeman attempted to open fire on the Commandant-General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Dr Ade Abolurin. This is contained in a statement by Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Force Public Relations Officer, on Friday in Abuja. It said the NSCDC spokesman, Mr Emmanuel Okeh, made the allegation on Friday, saying the incident occurred in Lagos on Friday. ``The allegation is being investigated by the force and the outcome will be made public soonest. Okeh had alleged that an unnamed police inspector single-handedly made the attempt,’’ the statement said. It quoted Okeh as saying the attempt was made on Abolurin and over 200 members of his committee. The statement said the members included representatives of the Nigerian Army, Economic and Financial Crimres Commision,  EFCC, Independent Corrupt PPractices Commission,  ICPC and Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, among others.

NATO indifferent to humanitarian disaster in Ukraine---Russia

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Friday said the movement of over 100 Russian aid trucks into Ukrainian territory was a blatant violation of international law, reports Itar-Tass. “The movement of the Russian humanitarian convoy into Ukrainian territory without customs and border control and without being accompanied by the International Committee of the Red Cross is a blatant violation of international law,” Poroshenko said at a meeting with visiting Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius. “We will do everything we can to ensure this does not lead to more dramatic consequences,” he said. Russian humanitarian convoy trucks arrive in Luhansk

All trucks from the Russian humanitarian convoy for southeastern Ukraine’s residents have arrived in the city of Lugansk in the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic, a city administration spokesman said Friday, reports Itar-Tass. “Unloading of humanitarian cargoes has started. The cargoes will then be distributed among residents,” the spokesman said. He did not rule out that part of the aid will later be sent to the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. Russian plane with medics flies to Ebola-stricken Guinea

A plane with a group of medics has left Moscow and headed for Guinea to help African countries deal with the Ebola virus disease, EVD, outbreak, the Emergencies Ministry said on Thursday, reports Itar-Tass. South Africa 's cabinet on Thursday issued a travel ban for non-citizens arriving from Ebola-hit West African countries of Liberia , Sierra Leone and Guinea . Jonathan assures Nigerians on implementation of confab report

( Nigeria ) President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday assured Nigerians that his administration will implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference, promising that its report and delegates’ efforts would not be wasted. Jonathan said at the ceremony to mark the submission of the National Conference Report in Abuja that government’s executive arm would immediately act on those aspects required of it. 3 jailed Al Jazeera staff appeal sentence

Lawyers for three Al Jazeera English staff jailed in Egypt have appealed against their convictions. The case will now be heard before the Court of Cassation, which will examine all the grounds of the appeal during hearing, for which a date has not been set. Funerals have been held for three Hamas commanders killed in the latest round of Israeli air raids in the Gaza Strip that left a total of 29 Palestinians dead. The crematorium in Liberia 's capital Monrovia is being overwhelmed by the number of dead Ebola victims being brought in, the Red Cross has said, reports Al-Jazeera. US tried to free American hostages in Syria
