ICC hears SERAP's petition on N11tn electricity sector scam

*International Criminal Court, ICC, in The Hague  (Nigeria) The International Criminal Court, ICC, in The Hague is considering the petition on the allegations of widespread, systematic and large-scale corruption in the electricity sector since the return of democracy in 1999 and under the governments of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and Goodluck Jonathan in Nigeria, anti-corruption advocacy group Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has confirmed.

(Nigeria) Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP,  has asked Mrs. Fatou Bensouda Prosecutor International Criminal Court, ICC,  to use her “good offices and leadership position to investigate whether the allegations of widespread, systematic and large-scale corruption in the electricity sector since the return of democracy in 1999 and under the governments of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and Goodluck Jonathan in Nigeria amount to crimes against humanity within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, and to prevail on the Nigerian government to surrender all suspected perpetrators for trial by the ICC.”

Court dismisses N100m rights suit against Diamond Bank

(Nigeria) A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Friday, held that Diamond Bank Plc acted within the law when it complied with an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, directives placing 'no debit order' on the account of Lagos based property company, NGP Properties and Company against the bank. Trial judge, Justice Muslim Hassan held this position in his judgment in a fundamental right enforcement suit instituted against the bank by the company. The construction company had approached the Court, alleging that Diamond Bank violated its fundamental right to property as enshrined in the 1999 constitution as Amended and the African Charter on Peoples and Human right when it placed "a no debit order" on its account. The applicant therefore, asked the court for a declaration that the  "post no debit order" placed on its account by Diamond Bank plc, amounted to a violation of its right as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nig

EFCC arrest FIRS Director over fax fraud

(Nigeria) The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested Abumere Osagie,  deputy director, regional tax office, Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, in a case of abuse of office and bribery. The suspect was picked following a complaint about his attempt to extort a University proprietor of the sum of N5million. Osagie and one Jamila Ojora had on January 27, 2016 allegedly approached Senator Ahmed Datti, the Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja and gave him a tax assessment of N20,029, 496.00 through a letter of intent, which he paid. However when he requested for the assessment certificate, they refused to oblige him. Instead they allegedly demanded for N5million gratification. It was gathered that all pleas by him fell on deaf ears.  Consequently, he petitioned the EFCC, and was advised  to play along. Consequently, marked N5million was delivered to the director through Ojora in a sting operation. Ojora was arrested after she collected the N5m. His confession

Court adjourns ex-NIMASA DG, trial to Feb. 17

(Nigeria) The trial of  a former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi, was on Friday stalled at a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, due to the absence of Governor Juan, the sixth defendant in the charge. Juan is said be in prison custody due to his inability to meet the bail condition granted him in a separate charge file against him and others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, by a Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere. At the Federal High Court, the EFCC arraigned Akpobolokemi and nine others, including two companies, before Justice Saliu Saidu. They were accused of conspiring to convert N3.4 billion belonging to NIMASA.   The commission said the money “was derived from stealing.” EFCC said the alleged offence contravened Section 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition/Amendment) Act of 2012 and punishable under Section 15 (3). The other accused are Captain Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuc

(Nigeria) A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Nigeria has denied bail to detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu‎, who has been in detention since October 2015,  pending his trial The judge, John Tsoho also denied bail to two other pro-Biafra agitators, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, who are standing trial alongside Kanu. Justice Tsoho in refusing their bail applications said, "The situation as perceived by this court is that there is conflict of interest between the applicants who insist that they have a right to agitate and the respondent (federal government) ‎which argues that it has the responsibility to maintain peace and order.
