Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi after immigration officials admitted wrongly giving him a detention note. The officials had detained Obi for committing several alleged financial crimes only to find out that he was being impersonated. They also said the uncomplimentary treatment he received was “completely unacceptable,” and issued a personal apology. “Frankly, the Immigration Official’s action – has been appalling – and we are sorry,” Immigration authorities apologized. Obi, was unlawfully detained and interrogated for hours by immigration officials at Heathrow Airport in London on April 7, 2023. UK donates £15 million to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition in North-East

(Nigeria) The UK has announced that it will spend £15 million of emergency humanitarian funding to provide vital food and nutrition assistance for vulnerable people in North-East Nigerian states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. The money will fund the United Nations Children’s Fund , UNICEF , and World Food Programme , WFP , to deliver life-saving activities to respond to crisis and emergency levels of food insecurity and malnutrition for vulnerable people, including malnourished women and children. This food assistance funding is part of the UK’s wider commitment to prioritise life-saving humanitarian aid to communities around the world who are most vulnerable due to the ongoing combination of crises. Nigeria not defrauded in OPL 245 deal, UK court rules against FG

(Nigeria) The Federal Government on Tuesday, lost its $1.7 billion claim against JP Morgan Chase Bank over the transfer of proceeds from the sale of OPL 245 in 2011, operated by Malabu Oil and Gas Limited. In the judgment delivered by the Business and Property Courts of England and Wales Commercial Court, said there was no proof that Nigeria was defrauded in the deal. FG had sued JP Morgan on the grounds of “Quincecare duty,” alleging that the bank “ought to have known” that there was corruption and fraud in the transaction which saw Malabu Oil and Gas Limited sell its 100 per cent in OPL 245 to Shell and ENI for $1.1 billion. Nigeria argued that there were enough “red flags” for JP Morgan to have halted the transfers. However, the bank rejected Nigeria’s claims, maintaining that all due processes were followed and money laundering checks were done, arguing that allegations of fraud only came up after a new government took over in Nigeria. The Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, again re-enforced the position of the legislature when he invited the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Godfrey Onyeama, to his office in Abuja on Monday for a meeting on the plight of Nigerians caught in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. P&ID $10bn award: FG appears in English court’s case management conference

(Nigeria) The Federal Republic of Nigeria  appeared in the English High Court last week for a scheduled case management conference, CMC. The CMC was held for the Court to decide certain procedural issues relating to the FRN’s ongoing challenge against the enforcement of a $10 billion arbitration award obtained by BVI-based shell company, Process and Industrial Developments Limited, P&ID. The fraud trial will now follow, and a timetable will be fixed in the coming weeks. Last week’s hearing follows the FRN’s major victory in September last year, when the English Court ruled that the FRN had “established a strong prima facie case” of fraud against P&ID and granted an unprecedented extension of time for the FRN to challenge the award. The judgment was delivered in the wake of new and substantive evidence uncovered by the FRN, which exposed the fraudulent and corrupt nature of activities undertaken by P&ID and its affiliates.   (Nigeria) The European Union, EU, has awarded scholarships to over 90 young Nigerians for various master degree programmes in universities across Europe under its Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees programme.  This prestigious international study programme is  part of the EU’s flagship educational and training programme, Erasmus+, which supports education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The latest number of beneficiaries is the highest to receive the scholarship in a single year, and represents a 125 per cent increase from the number that benefited from the programme last year.
