Ebola: FRSC advises motorists, transporters against overloading
Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, gave the
advice in an interview with newsmen after he received officials of the National
Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW in Abuja.
“If the vehicles are overloaded, the transmission of the
virus can be much faster, overloading is an offence but now something – Ebola,
has brought it to the front burner. I think it is a positive development in one
way or the other and it is also assisting us to ensure that our mandate is properly
executed.
``I know that passengers will further resist it –
overloading,’’ Oyeyemi said.
The corps marshal also called on the union to sensitise its
members on the disease to check its spread.
Alhaji Najeem Yasin, the National President of NURTW, said
the union was already organising a nationwide enlightenment programme for its
members on the dangers of the disease.
Yasin said that members of the union had been directed not
to overload their vehicles as part of measures to check the spread of the
disease.
Earlier, the president, who led the national and state
executives of the union on courtesy visit to the corps marshal, congratulated
him on his appointment.
Yasin described Oyeyemi’s appointment as a clear departure
from the past when FRSC chief executives were appointed from outside the
system, saying this would ensure stability in running the commission’s affairs.
He urged him to take measures to discourage underage
driving, speeding, drunk driving, non use of seat belt, as well as use of phone
while driving.
