Image
(Nigeria) The All Progressives Congress, APC, has warned the Federal Government against going ahead with its reported plan to remove the elected governor of Borno State and appoint a military administrator to oversee the affairs of the state, under the guise of intensifying the fight against Boko Haram. In a statement in Ibadan, Oyo State on Monday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the presidency should realise that there is always a limit to impunity, and that if indeed anyone should be removed over the protracted insurgency in the state and the entire North-east, it is President Goodluck Jonathan. ''What is happening in the North-east in general and Borno state in particular is failure of leadership at the highest level of government, especially because the imposition of a state of emergency in the three worst-hit states has given the President emergency powers to deal with the protracted crisis. ''As the Presid

PENGASSAN calls for monitoring of kerosene distribution

(Nigeria) The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, on Monday called on the Federal Government to effectively monitor the sales of kerosene in filling stations across the country. Mr Oluwaseyi Gambo, the National Public Relations Officer of PENGASSAN, made the call in an interview the News Agency of Nigeria  in Lagos. Gambo said that lack of interest in monitoring and effective regulation by government agencies were responsible for some filling stations selling the product above the approved pump price of N50 per litre. ``It is only in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC mega stations that we know it’s being sold at a regulated price. There should be publicity on radio, television and the newspapers on how much kerosene is being sold for at our filling stations. ``The government should set up monitoring units to monitor and arrest those stations that sell above the approved pump price. Ugandan president signs anti-gay bill into law

Uganda's president called homosexuals mercenaries and prostitutes Monday as he signed off on one of the world's toughest anti-gay laws, defying warnings from Western donors. Yoweri Museveni said he could not understand how one could "fail to be attracted to all these beautiful women and be attracted to a man" instead and described in lurid detail his particular revulsion to oral sex. "That is a really serious matter. There is something really wrong with you," Museveni, a devout evangelical Christian who has been in power nearly decades, said of gay men. "Homosexuals are actually mercenaries. They are heterosexual people but because of money they say they are homosexuals. These are prostitutes because of money," he added. The bill he signed into law holds that repeat homosexuals should be jailed for life, outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and requires people to denounce gays. APC in statement Sunday by Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, said “We would have ignored this ranting of a drowning man, but we decided otherwise so that the public may not be tempted to believe Wike’s devilish insinuation that Amaechi has committed any crime for which he deserves to be arrested as soon as he loses his immunity as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution as a sitting Governor. Indeed, nothing could be further from the truth, for the alleged crimes exist only in the satanic imagination of Wike and his cohorts. “We, however, understand Wike’s frustration since, by taking the entire Rivers State with him to APC, Governor Amaechi has dea

SERAP in the statement Sunday by its Executive Director, Mr Adetokunbo Mumuni said that, “the advice by Mr Adoke is patently inconsistent with the letter and spirit of Section 162 of the Constitution, which is to establish a dedicated account into which all public revenue by the Federal Government shall be paid, as well as to remove any arbitrary and non-transparent and non-accountable spending of public revenue. “In the first place, the use of the words ‘all public revenue’ in Section 162(1) suggests that the constitution allows of no distinction between net revenue and gross revenue. Jonathan surrounded by 'incompetent' frauds---Sanusi

Image
(Nigeria)  Nigeria's former central bank chief Lamido Sanusi on Sunday described the president who ousted him as a simple man trying to do well who has been undermined by incompetent and fraudulent aides. Sanusi, widely respected by economists in Nigeria and abroad, was suspended by President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday over alleged financial misconduct, a move seen by many analysts as politically motivated. Sanusi has accused the state Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) of misappropriating $20 billion (14.5 billion euros), allegations that earned him powerful enemies across the government. In an interview with AFP in Lagos, Sanusi said many of the people advising Jonathan are sycophants who do not speak frankly about the extent of corruption in government. "When you sit with President Jonathan himself he appears a nice simple person who is trying his best to do his best," Sanusi said. "His greatest failing obviously is that he is surrounded

AGF faults CBN over legal interpretation of constitutional provisions

Image
(Nigeria) The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Mohammed Adoke, has faulted the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN over its patronage of  private law firms in matters between government establishments. Adoke stated this on Thursday when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Finance to give his opinion on the monetary transactions of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC in its remittances between 2012 and 2013. He described the hiring the services of private lawyers to interpret a matter related to constitutional provisions by Sanusi as "irregular". "The resort by the CBN governor to get paid legal opinion from private counsel on the interpretation and application of the enabling statutes of government wholly-owned corporations is irregular. "It is a deliberate attempt to whittle down the powers of the Attorney-General of the Federation as the Chief Law Officer of the Federation as enshrined in the 1999Constitution,

Fulani leaders say the Berom politicians who control the state have systemically suppressed the rights of herdsmen, denying them access to desperately needed grazing

Students urge peaceful Venezuela march after violent night

Student protest leaders in Venezuela called a march with white flowers for peace Thursday after another night of violent disturbances wracking the capital Caracas and other cities. President Nicolas Maduro angrily rejected United States and other calls for dialogue as the protests, which have left four people dead, entered their third week. Demonstrators -- students and opposition parties -- are angry over rampant street crime, runaway inflation, corruption and bleak job prospects in the country with the world's largest proven oil reserves. Opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who has kept a low profile during the protests, on Thursday challenged Maduro to prove his claims that the demonstrations were part of a conspiracy to overthrow his government. "Is this a coup or an auto-coup?" he asked. "The only one who has talked about a coup d'etat has been government. It is a fabrication by government actors," he said. Prominent opposition leader Leopol

We did not in NPDC receive $6 billion.’’ According to him, royalties and taxes are paid from the account managed by the NNPC. He assured the committee that before Fe

Boko Haram chief threatens attacks in Nigeria oil region

"Niger Delta, you are in trouble," Shekau said, speaking in Hausa, the dominant language in northern Nigeria. The video was shot in an open field, where Shekau was surrounded by an armoured tank, two military vans and about a dozen gun-bearing soldiers. Yarima, a former governor of Zamfara, was arraigned in the court by the Inspector-General of Police on an eight-count charge of armed robbery, conspiracy and attempt to commit murder, among others. Yarima appeared before Justice Bello Gummi of the High Court along with the 29 co-accused persons. However, the lead defence counsel, Mr Muhammad Katu, observed the prosecution should have cited the charges on separate sheets of paper to avoid duplication and complications. This forced the judge to adjourn the sitting for about three hours. On return,  Gummi ruled that the case was properly filed and ordered for the continuation of the case. Both the  prosecution and defence counsel, Mr Oloye Torugbene and  Katu, respectively, however, applied  for an adjournment. The judge adjourned the case to A
