Imo communities block electricity company's entrance over blackout

(Nigeria) Four autonomous communities in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area  of Imo State on Monday barricaded the main entrance of the Owerri Business Unit of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company in protest of  `blackout’.
The protest, which lasted for more than six hours, resulted in gridlock at Amajeke Junction, where the company’s office is located.
The gridlock also affected the nearby Royce Road.
The affected communities are Elelem, Umuhu, Ngor and Ntu.
The Leader of the protesting group, Mr Felix Nwogu, told NAN that the communities had been engulfed in `blackout’ for the past three months.
He said that the situation had caused much setback to the communities.
Nwogu said that the communities had written letters to the company on the situation, claiming that the company had failed to address the situation.
“Those in charge of power distribution have not shown any interest in solving the problem. This protest is to make everybody feel our pain and make the relevant authorities to take necessary actions quick,“ he said.
The Business Manager of the unit, Mr Aderuju Badrinwa, said that the problem resulted from a technical fault.
He, however, said that the company would do its best to proffer a solution fast.
Badrinwa said that the Federal Government sited a big electricity project in the area to replace the previous rural electrification scheme.
He said that the technical fault was detected during a pre-inauguration test on the project.
He commended the protest group for their patience.
