Man killed in tussle over girl friend

(Nigeria) A 28 year old man, Mr Yusuf Salihu has been killed by another man over an alleged  misunderstanding over a girlfriend in Nasarawa State. Meanwhile, the police in Nasarawa State on Saturday confirmed the killing of  Salihu, 28, by another man in an apparent tussle over  a girl friend in Akwanga Local Government Area of the state. Ismaila Umar-Noman, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident when he spoke in Lafia. ``We received information on April 22, that some youths in Akwanga mobilised themselves with cutlasses, knives, among others, to revenge the death of Mr Yusuf Salihu who was allegedly stabbed to death by Mr Alias Sadam on misunderstanding over a girlfriend. ``We quickly sent our officers to the area to investigate what was happening and on reaching there, our men discovered that one Mr Yusuf Salihu was stabbed at his back with a knife by one Mr Alias Sadam and he died on the spot. ``The police have already commenced investigation in to th

5 INEC ad hoc staff arrested for thumb-printing in Imo

(Nigeria) Five ad hoc officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Imo State were on Saturday arrested for thumb-printing ballot papers in the governorship re-run election in the state. The officials were arrested at Omuma Primary School in Oru East local government following an order by Mr Mike Igini, one of the resident electoral commissioners deployed to Imo for the election. The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Imo, Dr Gabriel Ada, who confirmed the arrest, said that the officials were already in police custody. Ada said the ad hoc workers connived with agents of a political party to thumb-print ballot papers leading to their arrest. In the same vein, the election has been cancelled in Ozuh Primary School, Omuma following the arrest of 25 persons claiming to be INEC officials by military men. The arrested persons and the election materials in their possession were taken to the Oru East local government headquarters.

Unservicable ammunition explodes in Jos

(Nigeria) Unservicable ammunition on Saturday exploded in Jos, the Plateau State capital, causing apprehension among residents. Meanwhile,  the Nigerian Army has allayed fears of any attack in Jos. Spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, in a statement said "the explosion heard in Jos, Plateau State this morning (Saturda) was from an accident that occurred while troops authorized to destroy unservicable ammunitions were transporting the bad ammunition. "Some of the unserviceable ammunition  exploded in the process of moving them to demolition site in the bush." Col. Usman added that the explosion did not affect the barracks or neighbouring communities. He nevertheless disclosed that "Unfortunately, two soldiers lost their lives and one sustained injuries. Normalcy has returned to the area."

Sanctions against Russia not be lifted soon----- Kerry

Sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukrainian crisis will remain in force until Russia fully adheres to the Minsk agreements, United States Secretary of State, MrJohn Kerry said after a ministerial meeting of the Arctic Council in Canada’s Iqaluit answering questions from journalists. Oil marketers threaten to stop fuel importation

(Nigeria) The Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, MOMAN, on Friday threatened to stop the importation of petroleum products over yet-to-be-paid N256 billion subsidy claim by the Federal Government. It will be recalled that the Federal Government had repeatedly accused the oil marketers of blackmail . The Executive Secretary of MOMAN, Mr Obafemi Olawore made the disclosure at a news conference in Lagos. Olawore said that the last time the government paid marketers N100 billion subsidy claim was in February and it was paid in Sovereign Debt Note, SDN. He said that the post-dated note would mature at the end of April. The secretary-general said that before the N100 billion SDN was issued, the government was indebted to the tune of N315.8 billion. ``But if you deduct the N100 billion from the N315.8 billion, you will have 215.8 billion. ``Besides, the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, had earlier approved Batches T and U for last quarter of 2014 for payment

Housewife remanded for killing husband

(Nigeria) For allegedly killing her husband, an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos on Friday remanded a woman, Oyinyechi Akunne, in prison over the death of her husband. The accused, 29, who resides at No. 58, Idimu Road, Ejigbo, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for murder. The Prosecutor, Insp. Cousin Adams, told the court that the offence was committed on March 28 at 11.00 p.m., at her apartment. The couple had a heated argument and Onyinyechi picked a kitchen knife and stabbed her husband to death’’. Adams said the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The Magistrate, Mr Nurudeen Layeni, said the accused should be kept behind bars at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP. The case has been adjourned till May 25.

Delta NLC produces 2 chairmen

(Nigeria) Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has two factional chairmen  arising from its delegates conference held on Thursday night  in Asaba. Mr David Ofoeyeno, the Delta State President of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employee, NULGE, defeated his opponent, Mr Goodluck Ofobruku, state Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union. But the incumbent NLC chairman, Mr Williams Akporeha has also laid claim to being returned at a parallel election held at a separate venue. Ofoeyeno belongs to the Ayuba Wabbara’s faction of the NLC.
