Lawan celebrates with Nigerian women on International Women's Day

(Nigeria)  President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has felicitated with Nigerian women as they celebrate this year's International Women's Day. Lawan described the theme of this year's celebration, "Choose to Challenge",   as apt in reminding society of the pivotal roles women play in the family and nation-building and the need to pay attention to the challenges confronting them. "Women play indispensable roles in private and public lives and deserve full support and respect of society for those roles. "Our women also deserve support and encouragement to participate without discrimination or inhibitions in governance and public affairs in general. "Our public policies should therefore deliberately seek to get the best from them for the peace and progress of our country," Lawan said. Senate prohibits sexual offenders from working with children

Nigerian Senate (Nigeria) The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill prohibiting persons convicted of sexual offences from working with children, either as a teacher in schools or under any other job description likely to expose children to any form of abuse such as rape. The passage of the Child Rights Act, 2003 (Amendment) Bill, 2020, followed a clause-by-clause consideration of a report by the Committee on Women Affairs, Chaired by Senator Betty Apiafi (PDP, Cross River West). (Nigeria)  The Wife of Rivers State Governor, Justice Eberechi Nyesom-Wike has called for the proper education of the girl-child to empower them to face  the  challenges  of life. Speaking during the  Governor Wike's Widows Outreach programme for the 23 LGAs in Rivers state on Friday in Port Harcourt, Justice Nyesom-Wike  said that trained women have the capacity to withstand the pressures  of widowhood. She said: "If the girls are trained, they will have the capacity to face widowhood, if unfortunately it comes ". The Rivers Governor's  Wife urged mothers to  train their sons in ways that they will have respect for women.  She advised  widows not to allow the unfortunate circumstance  to destroy  their future, as they  can still contribute  to the growth of the state.  "That you  have lost your husbands does not mean that you cannot rise above  the unfortunate situation. I urge you to move ahead and contribute  to the development of the state ", she sa
