APC, gateway to election violence, says Rivers PDP chair, Obuah
Rivers State PDP Chairman, Mr Felix Obuah
(Nigeria) As more
reactions trail the success of last Saturday Local Government Elections in
Rivers State, the Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, Mr Felix Obuah has said that was now obvious that the All Progressives
Congress, APC, in the state had been largely responsible for all the vices
associated with past elections in the state.
Obuah in
a statement in Port Harcourt by his media aide, said that peace and decorum
that greeted the election across the state lends credence to the fact that PDP
does not only preach peace but puts it into practice as evidenced in the just
concluded election.
He said
it was for that reason that PDP swept the polls across the state, adding that
the feat emphasized the wide acceptance of the party by Rivers people and demonstrated
a determination to enthrone democracy in the state.
Obuah
said the lessons drawn from the council elections manifestly exposed the APC
members in the state as habitually violent, adding “It was a historic election, the best of its
kind in the annals of Rivers State history. This goes to show that APC is
gateway to violence.”
He said
that regardless of whatever reasons the APC may have adduced to stay away from
the elections, it was now clear that APC has been responsible for the avoidable
thuggry during elections in the State.
“As we
can observe from this historic election, it is crystal clear that those who
hire thugs and criminals to manipulate elections in Rivers State are the
APC. They refused to participate in the
election because their evil strategies were exposed and Rivers people would not
allow them to have their way any longer.
“All
through the election, there were no reported cases of using security
operatives, particularly the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS to manipulate
election results, hijack ballot boxes and intimidate political opponents,”
Obuah said, adding that those were common traits usually carried out by the APC
when involved in elections.
He
described the just concluded local government elections as a model also called
on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to borrow a leaf from
it as a standard for the 2019 General Elections.
Obuah
also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to make a statement to the effect
that violence, thuggery and the use of security agencies to manipulate
elections would not be accepted during the 2019 general elections.
