Ex-militants threatens showdown over denial of their scholarship benefits
*Professor Charles Dokubo
(Nigeria) A joint committee of Itsekiri groups under the aegis of
United Revolutionary Movement, has given a 14-day ultimatum to the Presidential
Amnesty Programme Office to correct the alleged sinister move by some officials
in the office to deny and neglect those in the third phase of the amnesty
programme of their scholarship benefits else they will resume destruction of
oil facilities in the Niger Delta region.
In a statement by Mr. Sylvester Jakpa, the group appealed to
the Federal Government to call to order some of the officials of the Amnesty
Office, who are allegedly involved in the move to deny them of their
scholarship benefits.
Jakpa said, “We were shocked to know that upon resumption of
duty of Professor Charles Dokubo, the newly appointed Special Adviser to the
President on Niger Delta Affairs/Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty
Programme, the new beneficiaries were deployed to schools while those in the
scheme since 2012, who where recently deployed, were withdrawn from the schools.
“While we are not against the said deployment of the new
beneficiaries, we totally condemn the sinister move by some officials of the
office to deny and neglect those in the third phase of the amnesty programme
since 2012.
“Apart from the recent denial of old beneficiaries for new
ones, the Itsekiri nation has been shortchanged in the composition of staff and
appointment in the office and this we hadbrought to the attention of the
previous administrations of Mr. Kingsley Kuku and Brigadier General Paul Boroh
(retd).
“It is against this background therefore, that we the
joint committee of itsekiri groups under
the auspices of the United Revolutionary Movement issue a 14-day ultimatum to
the Amnesty Office to address the devilish and satanic acts or face total
shutdown,” the statement added.
