(Nigeria) As part of the efforts to stimulate school sports, 54 primary schools in Gombe state on Monday received a donation of sports equipment from the National Lottery Trust Fund, NTLF, with a warning not to sell them.
“We don’t want to see any of these items in any market in Gombe state because they are not for sale. They are meant for the development of sports in the state.
“Pupils, if you notice that the equipment is not in your school, ask your teachers: where are our sports equipment?” said the Executive Secretary/CEO, National Lottery Trust Fund, Engineer Habu Ahmed while presented the equipment.
He said the Funds’ decision to complement Gombe state efforts with the gesture was based on the attention its government had given to education since 2011.
He also added that Gombe is one of the states that got the larger share of the equipment distributed.
Habiba Lawal who represented the Secretary to the government of the federation at the occasion said the intervention was channelled towards sports because sport is about friendliness, health and economic activities.
“Sports bring friendliness. Students that play sports and schools that play are more often friendlier. Sports also bring about good health as it leads to sound body and sound mind.
Sport is also an economic activity. We all know many Nigerians and sports men and women all over the world who earn good living from sports activities,” she explained.
Lawal urged benefitting schools to share with others that have not benefitted because the equipment would better used and the benefits more far reaching if shared.
The Deputy Governor of Gombe state, Mr. Charles Iliya who received the items on behalf of his principal, Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo appreciated the donor for finding Gombe state worthy of benefitting.
He further warned that the items should not be sold or seen in any market across the country, because the administration would not accept any act that will compromise the proper development of its children.
The equipment provided are for basketball, badminton, football, handball, high jump, judo, athletics (track race) and volleyball.
