Delta' Igun people protest Presco Nigeria illegal acquisition of their land

(Nigeria) Over 2000 elders and youths of Igun community in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, have marched against what they described as illegal acquisition of their ancestral farm land known as Egbo-Igun (Igbi-Igun), by an agricultural company in the area, Presco Nigeria Limited.
President General of the community, Chief Kingsley Omokri and the General Secretary, Chief Joseph Agbonavware, who led the placard carrying protesters, said “Presco Nig Ltd has just told us that some people have sold our ancestral farm land to them. They even mentioned two fugitives from this community as among the sellers.

“As a result, the Company has sent a message for us to come with our passport photographs, sign the sales documents and collect money. We are using this medium to tell the government and the whole world that we were not privy to such sale of our ancestral land known as Egbo-Igun. This is the second protest we are embarking upon as we are not ready to sell our land and they are beating us up.
“Our forefathers lived and farmed on the land, and we are living and farming on it from where we get our daily bread till date. We are not selling it, either as a whole or on individual basis.”
Some of their placards read, “Presco, do not enslave us,” “We are not selling our ancestral farm land,” “Government please come to our aid,” Presco beware of land grabbers,” among others.
Effort to reach the Company failed as fiery looking security officials stationed at the gate turned this reporter away.
It will  be recalled that the community carried out a similar protest three month ago against to the company on the same issue, in which its security officials beat up the old people as well as newsmen, with several of them sustained various degrees of injuries.
