Ogun pays N1.9m arrears of stipends to lepers

(Nigeria) The Ogun State Government has paid the sum of N1. 9million to no fewer than 65 inmates of the two Leper Colonies in Iberekodo, Abeokuta and Ijebu Igbo in the state.
The payment, which is to cover three months arrears of those being catered for by Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state is in line with the commitment of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun led administration towards ensuring better welfare for the inmates.
The state government took over the payment of the monthly stipends of N10, 000 to the lepers at the State Hansen Centers, following the inability of the Abeokuta North council to meet its obligations to those under its jurisdiction.
The council through the Ministry of Health had informed the state government of its inability to continue payment as at May 2015.
The government has also assured that it would look into allegations that land earmarked for the use of the lepers is being encroached upon and ensure it serves the purpose for which it is intended.
