Ekiti govt gives developers ultimatum to get building permit

(Nigeria) Ekiti State Government has issued a month ultimatum for developers and house-owners to obtain approved building plans or face the wrath of the law.

The state Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Prince Taelolu Otitoju who made this known in Ado Ekiti, said that government officials have embarked on an inspection exercise to ascertain the culprits that build houses without approved plans in the state.
According to the commissioner, the exercise tagged ‘Operation show your approved building plans’ would continue till the end of August while regular monitoring of development by officials of his Ministry would be continuous.
Lamenting that less than one percent of developments in newly urbanized areas in Ado metropolis have approved building plans, Prince Otitoju noted that government received only about 1,500 building plans for approval since the inception of the Fayose led administration in spite of the vast development and obvious expansion being witnessed in the state.
Otitoju stressed that the failure of developers and prospective house-owners to obtain approved building plans hinders proper planning and government’s ability to appropriately cater for such places.
He added that refusal to do the needful, in some cases, also resulted in a number of people erecting their buildings in unsuitable places such as waterways and other flood prone areas.
