Edo council workers threaten strike Aug 3 over arrears
Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Edo State chapter has threatened to commence on strike from August 3, 2016 if the state government fails to clear their salary arrears
and other emoluments before then.
President of NULGE, Edo State chapter, Mr Edward Ilenikhena
in a statement in Benin, on Sunday, said that the decision to embark on the strike
action followed the failure of the government to look into their demands after
the union had earlier issued a 14 day ultimatum for same to be addressed.
He disclosed that the union members across all the 18 local
governments have been fully mobilised for the mother of all strikes that would
ground government activities in Benin metropolitan and its environs.
He said, “The State Executive Council, SEC-in-Session
meeting held on July 20, hereby gives the state government 14 days ultimatum
effective from that day to address all the issues raised at the meeting.
Failure on the part of government to address these issues, the union will have
no other alternative than to mobilise all our members across the 18 councils to
resume our earlier suspended strike actions as contained in our communiqué
issued on February 17, which receipt was
acknowledge by the state government vide letter No.50/Vol.28/8 of February
2016, 23.
“The SEC-in Session seriously condemned the inhuman and
draconian policy of Edo State Government against local government workers in
the areas of non-payment of monthly salaries ranging from six to 18 months.
This is against the relevant labour laws and the International Labour
Organisation, ILO, convention in which Nigeria is a signatory.
“The SEC-in-Session therefore, demands that all the salary
arrears should be paid without delay. We reject in its entirety the divisive
policy of Edo State Government whereby all other workers in the state including
all beneficiaries of council monthly statutory allocation have received their
full salaries and allowances monthly whereas their counterparts in the local
government have received nothing at the end of every month. This and many more
were part of the resolution reached at the close of the meeting.
“If the union cannot get positive response from the state
government, we will ground the state economy from August 3, in full force. We
will tell Governor Adams Oshiomhole that we are his workers and he is our
principal, so he should pay us our salaries without further delayed.
“It is our sweat and nobody should trample on our rights.
Come August 3, Benin metropolis and its environs will not be conducive for the
government unless the governor himself or through his agency address our plight
before that day.”
