Ubulu Uku, Delta community raises alarm over killings, abductions
(Nigeria) The People of Ubulu-Uku community in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, have raised alarm over the spate of killings and kidnappings, in the community, including the murder of the paramount ruler of the kingdom, Obi Ofulue Akaeze II, by unknown persons and called on the state and Federal Governments to urgently come to their aid.
The cry for help followed alleged murder of a security aide
attached to the country home of one of the prominent political figures in the
community, Mr. Emeka Okwudishu, who has
been away from the state for several months.
Family members, who had visited Mr. Okwudishu’s country
home, were shocked to discover the body of the security aide, who had served
him for several years, killed and dumped in the water storage tank, within the
premises.
A Police source who confirmed the incident, said that
investigation into the killing was ongoing.
However, members of the Okwudishu family have raised alarm
over the incident, claiming that they have also been receiving death threats
from unknown phone calls, since they reported the murder to the law enforcement
agents.
An indigene of the community, who spoke on grounds of
anonymity said: “Ubulu Uku community has now become a desert of sort, where
people are being killed almost on a daily basis by assailants who break into
peoples’ homes, murder them and then disappear into thin air, without any
trace.”
The motive behind these killings is yet to be ascertained, but sources said it may not be
unconnected to political struggle in the traditional institution in the
community.
“Illustrious sons and daughter who usually visit home for
social and festive activities are now afraid to come back, while some have
relocated their parents and siblings to other places, because of fear for their
lives. This is having adverse effect on our socio-economic, cultural and
traditional life,” a source said.
