NDLEA secure conviction 47 drug users in Cross River

(Nigeria) The Cross River command of National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has secured convictions for 47 persons with drug-related offences in the last one year, an official has said.
Its Commander, Mrs Anthonia Edeh, said in a statement in Calabar on Sunday that the number was part of the 200 suspects, including 176 males and 24 females, arrested by the command in 2015.
In the statement to mark this year’s International Day for Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Edeh said that 47 convictions were secured at the Federal High Court, Calabar in respect of suspects with drugs-related offences.
``Exhibits recovered from the suspects stood at 501.3 kilogrammes, which includes cannabis sativa, cocaine, heroin and other psychotropic substances,’’ she said.
She explained that the command also destroyed five hectares of cannabis sativa at Mpara-Ntu Forest in Odukpani Local Government Area.
``The command also counseled and rehabilitated 90 drug dependent persons back to the society under our drug demand reduction activities,’’ she added.
The commander called on the public to always volunteer information on activities of drug barons to help the agency succeed in its task.
Edeh solicited the support of the Cross River government in the fight against drug abuse in the state.
``We want the state government to show more concern in the fight against drug abuse. We appeal to them to assist us with logistics, including vehicles and other necessary tools, to help us fight this menace,’’ she said.
The commander said that the theme of this year’s campaign, ``Listen First,’’ was a clarion call to parents to take more interest in what their children did all the time.
