Herdsmen killings: FG should be sincere ----Rev Nnubia

(Nigeria) Parish priest of Catholic Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles, Abuja, Rev. Father Christopher Nnubia, has tasked the Federal Government to be sincere in dealing with the crisis arising from activities of herdsmen in the country, saying the continued silence of the government was a cause of worry to citizens of the country.
The priest, who noted that the mission of the herdsmen was still unclear, charged people losing sleep over alleged planned inslamisation of the country to know that changing the country to a single religion was not possible.
Speaking to parishioners on Sunday at the Church's 2016 Father's Day celebration, Rev. Nnubia, who also faulted government's non creation of jobs for the teeming youths in the country, resulting in increase in crime, said citizens must begin to think of how they can protect themselves.
According to him, "The problem of herdsmen is dicey, nobody knows where the problem is coming from, some people say it is political, some people say they are not even from Nigeria.
"But if they are not from Nigeria, the question is how did they come to know all these local government areas to be able to terrorize the people? Maybe we have insiders that are guarding them.  What we hear is inslamisation of the nation but we know is that it is not possible because we have freedom of religion.
''The government of the day should be proactive and sincere in dealing with the situation because I don't know why the government of the day has not actually come out openly to say something. It worries so many people including myself.
"The significance of this very important event is to recognize the fathers for the roles they play in the church because they are very important. My message is that the fathers are the shepherds of the family and they should continue to be good shepherds, they should always be available to their children and wives so that they see them as role models.
''The family, as we all know in the church is the domestic church, the family is also the soul of society. If there is a problem with the family which is the soul of the society and there is a problem with the family which is the domestic church, it automatically means the church has the problem.
'"As Saint Augustine would say, a disordered person makes a disordered family and makes a disordered community and society.  So, my message is that the family is facing a lot of challenges and Christian fathers should wake up because they are sleeping. They should wake up from their slumber and face these challenges," he said.
He noted that the problem of insecurity in the country was a sign that all was not well.
“ What is responsible is that first of all, the institution is having problems. In other words, some of our young ones have no jobs. Some are not even educated and since they are not educated, they feel that the best way out is to make money by all means.
"So what is actually responsible for this is that we are living in a chaotic situation in our country, Nigeria. There's an urgent need for government to sit up.”
He condemned the abduction of men of God for ransom, charging those responsible to desist.
"The problem of insecurity is a sign that the country is facing a lot of challenges. Many people including priests have been kidnapped. There was the kidnap of one in Otukpo Diocese  in Benue State, where the kidnap priest was not discovered until he was found dead.
"Another one has been reported in Kano Diocese and we are hearing of paying ransom. It's unheard of to kidnap men of God and demand for money. I don't know what they will benefit from it. We are now going to a situation where everybody should begin to think of how to safeguard himself. We have a government that should be able to take care of its citizens, protect the citizens but what we hear these days from among even security angle is that 'please, pay the ransom.'
"If we pay the ransom, what are we saying? We are invariably saying that we are also supporting these people to perpetuating these evils. So, there is a problem."
Speaking further, he said "Fathers have roles to play in this and one of those responsibilities is to be a Shepherd and when they are busy not even thinking of their children, not even thinking of transmitting and giving them the basic human and Christian values, what do you expect?
'' These children grow up without even their parents guarding them, they learn outside, learn from their peers and then in schools, they spend their times in schools and when they come back home, the parents are even busy not even caring about these children.
"They end up joining cults and do all sorts of things and when they grow, they come to a place where they graduate and have no jobs. What do you then expected it? So you discover that even the youths who are supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow have no hope of survival and it's affecting everybody. That is why I said earlier that the church too, is involved in a way. So we have to sit up,”  he advised.
