NUJ condemns attack on journalist in Port Harcourt


(Nigeria) The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Rivers State, has said that Mr Ibim Asako, Chairman of Radio Rivers chapel of the union, was attacked by suspected thugs during Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Convention in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Mr Anayo Onukwugha, Assistant Secretary of the union, in a statement in Port Harcourt on Monday, said Asako was at the Sharks Stadium, venue of the convention, to cover the proceedings.
“He is still lying ill at the hospital following the attack on him. We observe that of recent, journalists in the state, who are out to perform their official and constitutional duties, have become targets of attack by security agents and political thugs”, it said.
The statement demanded apology from those responsible for the provision of security and protocol during the convention, especially, the leadership of the PDP and the Rivers State Police Command.
It said the union would be forced to take drastic measures, like mobilising members to boycott activities of PDP and the State Police Command, if no apology was tendered to the union within seven days.
