Group tasks FG to dialogue with Niger Delta Avengers
A youth group, Niger Delta Peace Movement in a statement on
Wednesday in Warri, Delta State, noted
that the continued neglect of the region by successive government was the bane
of incessant youth insurrections against the Nigerian state.
The statement by president of the group, Mr. Tonfa Cyprian, maintained
that perpetual youth restiveness in the oil-rich Niger Delta was as a result of
the protracted neglect meted out on the region and its people and called on the
federal government to address the region’s plight holistically to forestall
youth uprising in the region.
He advised President Muhammadu Buhari to employ the tool of
dialogue as his predecessors did and not to listen to those he called “self-acclaimed
whistle-blowers and nitwits” who he alleged were in the business of
misinforming the President on issues on ground and mislead him on the
way-forward.
The statement said, “If President Buhari could be meticulous
and sincere to himself and Nigerians this agitation has been in existence since
the discovery of oil in the region; initially the agitation was peacefully
institutionalized to the appropriate authorities both written and orally but to
no avail which gave birth to the arms struggle.
“Against this backdrop, as a conflict resolution and
disaster manager who is vastly acquainted with the region, hereby advise that
the President should not condescend and succumb to those self–acclaimed whistle-blowers
and nitwits who misinform him out of internal hatred for each other, pointing
accusing fingers at an ex-Militant leader as one behind the Niger Delta
Avengers’ operations, which is baseless and unfounded and should be disregarded
but rather proffer sustainable solution to the problem. These informants are
doing this to curry favour from him for their personal aggrandizement.”
