Cross River govt to end violence against children

(Nigeria) The Cross River Government, on Wednesday, called for more collaborative efforts to end child abuse referred to as Violence Against Children, VAC, in the state.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Stella Odey, gave the assurance on Wednesday in Calabar at a briefing with media stakeholders to flag off the campaign.
The briefing, which had the focus of ending VAC, was organised by the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, in collaboration with the State Government.
Odey said the government had already domesticated what she called 'Understanding the Cross River Child Rights Law 2009' to end the practice in the state.
According to the commissioner, the State Government has been taking the welfare of children very seriously in its policy programmes.
A child protection specialist, UNICEF Nigeria, Enugu Field Office, Mrs Nkiru Maduechesi, also said that six out of every 10 children, suffered violence in the country.
She said that violence against children in Nigeria had physical, emotional and sexual dimensions.
Maduechesi urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure the end of the ugly trend since it posed far reaching consequences on the society.
She said the VAC inauguration in Cross River slated for June 16 would make the state the second in Nigeria to do so after Lagos State.
The VAC campaign had also been inaugurated by the Federal Government.
Dr Omotunde Esu, the wife of the state’s deputy governor, on the occasion, urged parents to ensure adequate care of their children.
Highlight of the occasion was the distribution of copies of the state’s Child's Rights Law free to the people in attendance.
Mrs Ebele Ebo of the National Human Rights Commission and representatives of the media, attended the occasion.
