Court jails 2 men 7 years each for trafficking hemp

(Nigeria) A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced, Innocent Dike and Godwin Ehigbue, to seven years imprisonment for dealing in drugs.
Dike, 32, and Ehigbue,36, were arraigned on April 11 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA,  on a two-count charge bordering on the offence.
They pleaded guilty to the charge and the judge, Justice Babs Kuewumi, adjourned the case for a review of facts and sentencing.
Prosecuting counsel, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, tendered their written statement, a request for scientific aid form, a test analysis form and an envelope containing remnant of the analysed substance.
Aernan also tendered a bulk of the exhibit and the court accordingly admitted the documents and marked them as exhibit.
He said they committed the offence on February 17, 2014 and were arrested at Igbogbo in Ikorodu, Lagos, with about 9.6 kg of Cannabis Sativa, also known as Indian Hemp.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
Aernan then urged the court to convict the accused based on their pleas and other evidences.
In his judgment, Kuewumi found the accused persons guilty as charged and ordered that the drug exhibit in custody of the NDLEA be destroyed.
``The accused are hereby found guilty as charged and they are accordingly convicted. They are sentenced to a term of seven years imprisonment each, beginning from the date of their arrest,’’ the judge held.
