NIS rescues 11 girls from human traffickers in Katsina

(Nigeria) The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, in Katsina State, has rescued 11 girls suspected to be victims of human trafficking.
Alhaji Mohammed Alfa, NIS Comptroller, Katsina State Command, who briefed newsmen on Monday in Katsina, said that the girls were between the ages of 18 and 25 years.
He said that six males were arrested for trying to cross the country illegally.
He said that NIS patrol team arrested the girls and their male counterparts at Kongolam border on Saturday while attempting to cross to Libya to seek employment.
Alfa said that the victims told men of immigration service that they were on their way to Libya en route Agadez, Niger Republic.
``The victims possessed neither travel documents nor means of livelihood. They are ambitious to get to Libya because they were misled by their traffickers. Some of them told us that their parents supported them for the illegal travel, not knowing that Nigeria is more peaceful than Libya,’’ he said.
The comptroller said that the command was working hard to arrest the traffickers who operate within the border areas of the two countries.
He urged the media to assist the command in enlightening the public on the dangers associated with human trafficking and traveling without necessary documents.
He said that the command would hand the victims over to relevant authorities for necessary action.
