I will abide by PDP's Constitution on term limit ---Sheriff
(Nigeria) The National Chairman of People’s Democratic Party,
PDP, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, said on Monday that he would not stay in office
beyond the period prescribed by the party's Constitution.
Sheriff stated this when Forum of PDP former House of
Representatives members paid him a visit in Abuja.
The delegation was led by former Deputy Speaker of the House
of Representatives, Mr Emeka Ihedioha.
Sheriff said his joy was that the party was active once
again as a result of his emergence as chairman of the party.
He said that as a man of character and integrity, who should
live up to expectation and promises, he would carry members along in the
party's forthcoming congresses and convention.
"Under no circumstances would l stay in office beyond
the period prescribed by the PDP Constitution.
"In the light of the above, I will announce the
Convention Congress Planning Committee after due consultation with all organs
of the party few days from today. I assure all faithful members of the party
that I would do everything within my powers to ensure that I complete the
processes of congress before the expiration of my time in office", Sheriff
said.
The national chairman also said that by the time he finishes
with the party's congresses and convention, everybody in PDP would be happy.
Sheriff said that under his watch, the PDP will not be run
with impunity.
"I will make sure that nobody imposes people on the
generality of the people. Whatever I am
doing, it has to be in cognisance with the constitution of our party. I will
make sure that everybody obeys the rule of the game.
"Very soon, after I make all the consultations and
agreement with the National Working Committee, there will be a congress and convention
that will be credible and stand the test of time."
Earlier, Ihedioha said the forum came to show solidarity
with the party and congratulate Sheriff.
"We have also come to urge the party to remain strong
and focussed", Ihedioha said.
He added that members would continue to be partners in
progress with the party and its national leaders.
Ihedioha said the forum believed that the programmes to be
rolled out by Sheriff would reposition the party.
