Flu death in Ukraine hits 122
The death toll from a flu outbreak in Ukraine has reached
122, a senior health official said on Thursday.
"According to the Health Ministry, a total of 122
flu-related deaths have been registered in Ukraine," said Olga Bogomolets,
head of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada parliament health department, reports Tass.
"This week, 21 people died of flu," she said.
Health ministry data shows swine flu as Ukraine's most
widespread strain, officially known as influenza virus A/H1N1.
Oleg Ruban, chief of Kiev's regional epidemiological
service, reported on January 25 that a new type of swine flu had appeared,
classified as virus A (H3N2).
Health Minister Alexander Kvitashvili said on January 26
that more than 2.6 million people were infected with flu.
Epidemic thresholds are exceeded in 18 regions.
