Fire guts UNN Okeke hostel

(Nigeria) Fire on Wednesday gutted Okeke hostel of the University of Nigeria, Nsuka, destroying the whole two-storey hostel.
The fire which started at  7:30 p.m.,  could not be put out as it razed the building completely.
According to a student in one of the rooms in the hostel, who lost everything, the fire started when power was interrupted and immediately restored. She said it was wrong connection of wires that caused fire.
The December fire was aided by gas cylinders used for cooking by the students, which explode at intervals.
The fire service truck that came from its post near the school gate could not put out by fire fighters, as they retreated.
Most of the occupants of the hostel had already travelled for the Christmas and new year celebrations, while some of them who were around were able to save any of their belongings.
