Iraqi forces liberate Ramadi from Islamic State
The city of Ramadi has been liberated from Islamic State
jihadists, the Iraqi army said on Tuesday.
"People of Iraq, we bring you news of the victory of
the heroic army ... in plucking Ramadi from the claws of Daesh [Islamic State]
and liberating its neigbourhoods one after another," an army statement
read out on state television said, reports dpa.
"The city of Ramadi has been liberated and the
anti-terror troops in the armed forces have raised the Iraqi flag on the
government complex in Ramadi," the statement added.
The fall of the city to the jihadists in May was a serious
blow to the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
