5 men indicted over killing of Russian opposition leader
Russian federal investigators have indicted five men in the
February murder of political opposition leader, Boris Nemtsov, who was shot
dead outside the Kremlin.
The Investigative Committee said in a statement on Tuesday
in Moscow that the suspects, Zaur Dadayev, Anzor and Shadid Gubashev, Temirlan
Eskerkhanov and Khamzat Bakhayev, are being charged with conducting a contract
killing and illegally obtaining, possessing and transporting a firearm, reports dpa.
Nemstov, opposition leader and former Deputy Prime Minister,
was shot dead on the night of February 27 on a bridge next to the Kremlin while
walking home after dinner with a Ukrainian companion.
Nemtsov had been expected to lead a major opposition march
and release a report about alleged Russian military involvement in the Ukraine
conflict.
The committee also disclosed that another suspect, Ruslan
Mukhudinov, who was believed to have ordered the murder, has been placed on an
international wanted list.
The statement said Mukhudinov was suspected of using a fake
passport to travel to the United Arab Emirates, where he was believed to
currently reside.
It said Dadayev, a former Chechen serviceman, has been the key
suspect in the murder, and reportedly confessed early in the investigation and
then attempted to retract.
He said he killed Nemtsov for insulting Islam and the leader
of Russia's predominantly Muslim republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov.
