Russia carries out 700 airstrikes in Syria

Russia's Air Force on Monday said it had conducted almost 700 airstrikes in Syria since it began a bombing campaign against rebels in the country three weeks ago.
According to a report made available to newsmen, the airstrikes which have destroyed rebels command post, bunkers and artillery, were conducted in the provinces of Aleppo, Damascus, Idlib, Latakia and Hama, reports dpa.
The Syrian government, which has been battling rebel forces including the Islamic State since 2011, is one of Russia's closest allies in the Middle East.
As a result of the conflict, more than half of Syria's pre-war population of 22.4 million has been internally displaced or fled abroad, and a quarter of a million have been killed, according to the United Nation.
