Boko Haram kingpin, 42 others arrested in Banki axis

(Nigeria) The Nigeria Army said on Wednesday that troops advancing toward Banki axis have arrested 43 more suspected Boko Haram terrorists, including its kingpin in the area, Bulama Modu.
The Army said in a statement by its acting spokesman, Col. Sani Usman, that the troops also rescued 241 women and children in the operation.
It said arms and ammunitions, bows and arrows and a horse were recovered from the terrorists’ kingpin.
The statement said one of the arrested terrorists led troops to where he buried his AK-47 rifle at Jangurori village.
Usman said in the statement that the recoveries in the latest operations confirmed the Army’s earlier claim that the terrorists were abandoning their commanders and burying weapons.
``Please recall that yesterday advancing troops along Banki axis were making tremendous progress in which they cleared two Boko Haram terrorists camps at Jangurori and Bulatori villages.
``In addition to that, the troops have also arrested 43 suspected Boko Haram terrorists including one of the Boko Haram kingpins in the area, Bulama Modu, who is an ‘Amir’ of Bulakuri.
``To further confirm what was said earlier about the terrorists abandoning their commanders and burying weapons, one Mohammed Modu led troops to where he buried his AK-47 rifle at Jangurori village.
``Apart from arms and ammunitions, bows and arrows recovered from Bulama Modu, the kingpin, a horse to enhance his deadly pursuits was also recovered.’’
It said troops operating around Wudla village also arrested one suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Aji Gambo.
It said the arrested kingpin revealed that the Boko Haram terrorists that attacked Kirawa and Kolofata in northern Cameroon were from Dara Jamel village in Nigeria.
The statement said the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has commended the troops in the frontline for their impressive performance thus far in counter-insurgency operation.
The statement said all troops involved in the operations have so far displayed the highest sense of patriotism and determination to continue with the fight against Boko Haram terrorists to their last enclave.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
