Saudi troops have pushed into a stronghold of Yemen's Houthi rebels, Saudi-owned broadcaster Al Arabiya reported Wednesday, in the first action of its kind since the kingdom led a military coalition against the Iran-backed rebels five months ago.
The troops moved for several kilometres inside the Yemeni province of Saada near the Saudi border town of Jizan, the Dubai-based television channel said, reports dpa.
It added that the move is aimed at stopping the Houthis from firing shells across the border into Saudi Arabia.
There was no comment from the Houthis.
In recent weeks, the Saudi-led alliance has intensified airstrikes against Saada amid an influx of its residents.
The mostly Shiite rebels, who hail from Saada, have seized large parts of Yemen in recent months in a power struggle against Saudi-backed President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi.
In late March, Saudi Arabia and its Sunni partners started an air campaign after the Houthis and allied military troops advanced on Yemen's southern city of Aden, forcing Hadi to flee the country.
Saudi-backed militias loyal to Hadi have in recent weeks regained ground from the rebels in southern and central Yemen.
