Russia to assumes UN Security Council chairmanship, Sept 1
Russia is taking over the United Nations Security Council
chairmanship on September 1, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria
Zakharova told a press briefing on Thursday.
"The work of the UN Security Council in the coming
month will be intensive," the diplomat said, reports Tass.
"This is the normal regime for the UN Security Council,
considering open sessions of the General Assembly and general political
debates."
Zakharova also recalled that the UN marked its 70th
anniversary this year. She noted that the celebrations would "bring
together a large number of heads of state and top diplomats from around the
world."
"The main event of Russia’s month-long chairmanship
will be an open ministerial meeting on maintaining peace and security,
resolution of conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa and the fight
against the terrorist threat," Zakharova said.
"It will take place on September 30."
The diplomat added that that the relevance of this topic
could hardly be questioned.
