Navy Chief tasks officers on fight against oil theft

(Nigeria) The Chief of Naval Staff, CNS, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ette Ibas, on Monday tasked officers and ratings to sustain the fight against oil theft on Nigeria's waterways.
Ibas gave the charge at an interactive session with officers and ratings during a familarisation tour of the Nigeria Navy Ship, NNS, Quora in Lagos.
The navy chief while urging the men on total eradication of oil theft, however, warned officers to steer clear from any form of illegal operation.
``I, the CNS, will not involve myself in any illegal act and I will not tolerate it. Nobody should use my name to perpetrate any illegal operation. The nation is losing a lot through illegal activities and we must stop it,’’ he said.
Ibas also advised the officers and rating to renounce membership of every illegal group, warning that anyone caught would be punished accordingly.
According to him, it is the responsibility of the navy to protect the country’s waterways and breach of this responsibility is a betrayal of the trust reposed in the navy.
``Laxity of the past will no longer be tolerated, the navy must live up to its constitutional responsibility,’’ he said.
The CNS also admonished the officers and ratings to change their attitude to the handling of government property and ensure that property in their care were maintained properly.
He decried the poor culture of maintenance, adding that 50 per cent of the country’s naval ships were currently in bad conditions due to careless use.
Ibas, however, commended the officers and ratings for their commitment and sacrifices in spite of the challenging circumstances.
The officers and ratings unanimously resolved to support the fight against oil theft by raise of the hand when the challenge was thrown to them.
