DSS arrests 20 Boko Haram commanders, members
(Nigeria) The Department of State Services, DSS, said it had
arrested 20 more suspected Boko Haram commanders and members in Lagos, Kano,
Plateau, Enugu and Gombe states between July 8 and August 25.
A statement by an
operative of the service, Mr Tony Opuiyo, in Abuja on Sunday, said that of particular note was the arrest of Usman
Shuaibu on July 8, in Gombe State, the coordinator and executor of the suicide
attacks in Potiskum, Kano, Zaria and Jos.
The statement said the arrest was made possible as a result
of the service re-strategised Counter Terrorism measures.
It noted that the group’s new pattern of movement and spread
was necessitated by the pressure being put on it in its core areas of strength
in the North East.
The statement noted that the arrest of Shuaibu and the core
members of his group stemmed the spate of bombings by the extremist sect.
It said the sudden influx of Boko Haram members into Lagos
State showed the determination of the sect to extend its nefarious terrorist
activities to other parts of the country.
"The arrest of these confessed terrorist elements has
however helped in no small measure to avert devastating attacks in the area.
"However, the Service is making efforts to conclude its
investigations and commence prosecution of the suspects, " it said.
It said the service was determined to work with other
stakeholders in the fight against terror and other forms of criminality in our
country.
"Citizens and residents are therefore called upon to
rise to the occasion by volunteering useful information to the service and
relevant security agencies," it said.
