Buhari probes procurement of weapons from 2007 to date

(Nigeria) The Federal Government on Monday set up a committee to investigate the procurement of hardware and munitions in the Armed Forces from 2007 to date.
In a statement in Abuja by the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, the committee was set up by the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Munguno (rtd),  following directive by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The statement said the committee, which has AVM retired J.O.N. Ode as President, was mandated to identify irregularities in the procurement and make recommendations for streamlining the process.
It said the committee would also investigate the exclusion of relevant logistics branches from arms procurement under past administrations, ``which, very often resulted in the acquisition of sub-standard and unserviceable equipment.’’
The statement said the establishment of the committee was in line with the present administration's determination to stamp out corruption and irregularities in the public service.
``It comes against the background of the myriad of challenges that the Nigerian Armed Forces have faced in the course of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast, including the apparent deficit in military platforms with its attendant negative effects on troops' morale.’’
The statement said the committee would specifically investigate allegations of non-adherence to correct equipment procurement procedures.
Members of the committee, according to the statement, include retired Rear Adm. J.A. Aikhomu, retired Adm. E. Ogbor, retired Brig.-Gen L. Adekagun and retired Brig.-Gen. M. Aminun-Kano.
Also in the committee are retired Brig.-Gen. N. Rimtip, retired Commodore T.D. Ikoli, retired Air Commodore U. Mohammed, retired Air Commodore I. Shafi'I and retired Col A.A. Ariyibi.
Others include Group Capt. C.A. Oriaku and Mr I. Magu from the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, while Brig.-Gen. Y.I. Shalangwa would serve as Secretary.
