Taliban captures 80 villages in northern Afghanistan
Taliban fighters seized a district and at least 80 villages
in northern Afghanistan Tuesday, officials confirmed.
Taliban fighters intensified their attacks on the Kohistanat
district in the northern province of Sar-i-Pol Tuesday, taking the control of
the bulk of the district, provincial governor's spokesman Hamid Khaliqyar said, reports dpa.
"At least 17 policemen, including the police chief of
the district, are missing," he said.
The insurgents said they have seized the bulk of the
district by killing several troops in the clashes.
The Taliban launched the current offensive in late April,
vowing nationwide attacks in what is expected to be the deadliest summer in a
decade.
Afghan security forces, stretched on multiple fronts and
facing record casualties, are struggling to rein in the militants even as the
government makes repeated efforts to jump-start peace negotiation.
In the northern province of Kunduz, "scores of Taliban
militants attacked Khan Abad district, fighting the local policemen, capturing
about 80 villages," said Mohammad Yousuf Ayoubi, chairman of the
provincial council.
"At least 14 villagers fighting the militants were
killed or injured," he said, adding that "hundreds of families are
displaced, fleeing to other districts."
