C/River Govt evacuates 67 street children

(Nigeria) The Cross River Government through its Ministry of Social Welfare and Community Development has so far evacuated 67 street children in Calabar, Cross River State.
The Director of Social Welfare, Mr Isaac Ebuara, said that the exercise which started June 2015 followed a directive by Governor Benedict Ayade.
Ebuara said the affected children were now at a transit home at the Destiny Child Centre, Calabar, adding that the children were being rehabilitated pending their reunification with their families.
He said investigation had shown that 90 per cent of the children were from the neighbouring states, who had opted to be on the streets for no just course.
According to him, their parents are willing to receive them back to their homes and give them quality education.
He also said that the effect of the anti-social behaviour acquired by children on the streets had created negative impact on the society.
Ebuara said the ministry was putting effort to inculcate moral values on those children and encourage them to enhance their education or engage in vocational skills to improve their livelihood.
He said the ministry had also advised the children to remain with their parents and go back to school because ``education is the basic foundation for their future development’’.
