Three rebels behind a hijacking attempt 17 years ago were among eight death row prisoners hanged in Pakistan on Thursday, officials said, as authorities stepped up planned executions this week.
The separatists from the south-western province of Balochistan attempted to hijack a plane with 38 people on board in May 1998 to force the Pakiistani government not to conduct planned nuclear tests in their region, reports dpa.
They wanted to divert the flight to neighboring India but the attempt ended in their arrest with no deaths or injuries to passengers or crew.
The government went ahead and carried out nuclear tests in Balochistan on May 28 and Thursday marked the 17th anniversary of the event.
The three men were hanged at two different prisons in the southern province of Sindh, a jail official said, seeking anonymity.
Five prisoners convicted of murder were also hanged in the central province of Punjab and the north-western province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, an Interior Ministry official said, also wishing not to be named.
More than 20 death row prisoners have been hanged in Pakistan this week, as authorities stepped up planned executions after a six-year moratorium on executions was lifted in December.
There are at least 8,000 death row prisoners in Pakistan, according to statistics compiled by the Interior Ministry.
