German Chancellor Angela Merkel was Wednesday named the most powerful woman in the world, for the ninth consecutive year, by Forbes Magazine which cited her actions related to the German economy, eurozone stability and Russian sanctions.
United States presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton was a close second. Other women listed in the magazine's top 10 most powerful women include philanthropist Melinda Gates, US Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen, and Christine Lagarde, head of the International Monetary Fund, reports dpa.
Merkel "fought off a national recession during the global economic crisis with stimulus packages and government subsidies for companies that cut hours for workers, and she is in the thick of trying to help Greece revive its economy," Forbes said.
"She has used her power against [the Islamic State], breaking the post-Nazi-era taboo of direct involvement in military actions by sending arms to Kurdish fighters. In the Russia-Ukraine crisis, she has been engaging in shuttle diplomacy trying to broker a peace deal with Vladimir Putin," it added.
The magazine said that the only woman who could potentially usurp Merkel's position as the world's most powerful woman in 2016 is Clinton, who last month announced her bid to run for president.
