A wildfire raging close to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been brought under control, Ukrainian authorities said Wednesday.
Firefighters have stopped the flames from spreading further, the Ukrainian Emergency Situations Service, which oversees the country's firefighters, said in Kiev, reports dpa.
The agency added that local radiation levels were normal.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arsenyi Yatsenyuk said late Tuesday that the fire was the region's biggest since 1992. Firefighters said that they suspect arson or negligence as the cause.
The Chernobyl nuclear power plant was the scene of one of the largest nuclear accidents in 1986, when one of its reactors exploded and toxic radiation was carried into wide areas of Europe.
The international community is still struggling to improve a concrete hull over the reactor to make the area safe for the future.
A pledging conference scheduled in London on Wednesday is to discuss how to raise another 675 million dollars necessary to complete the works.
