Rivers State doctors endorse Wike

(Nigeria) Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  governorship candidate, Mr Nyesom Wike has been endorsed by medical doctors both in the private and public sector operating in the state endorsed him to emerge as the next governor of the state.
The endorsement which came after an interactive session between the Rivers PDP guber candidate,  Wike and the doctors under the platform of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, and their affiliates was attended by the serving deputy governor, Engineer Tele Ikuru.
Announcing the endorsement, Rivers State NMA Chairman, Dr Ibifuro Green decried the neglect of the health sector by the outgoing administration in the state and the deliberate abandonment of the welfare of medical doctors by the outgoing administration.
 He urged Wike to ensure that health development programmes outlined in his development blueprint for Rivers State were implemented to improve the health sector and ensure that the health challenges suffered by the people of the state are addressed. He added that the doctors will also support President Goodluck Jonathan because of the success of his transformation agenda.
Accepting the endorsement of the medical doctors,  Wike assured that he will diligently execute programmes enshrined in his development blueprint to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery in the state.
Wike said though the healthcare system in Rivers State has collapsed and presently on life support, he has arranged a team of medical experts led by his running mate, Dr Mrs Ipalibo Harry Banigo to ensure that priority attention is paid to this all-important sector.
According to him, his administration will construct a medical school at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology to train doctors and will also engage in training doctors from the public and private sectors in specialized areas to improve their capacity.
 He assured stated that his administration will enhance universal healthcare coverage in Rivers State through development and equipping of general hospitals in rural areas of the state, extension of grants to private medical practitioners for improved hospital facilities and improvement of the welfare of medical doctors and other health professionals.
According to him: “I will restructure the free medical programme for the under fives and pregnant women to make it functional since it has been crippled by the failed APC administration.
“I will develop a comprehensive welfare package for doctors and initiate an insurance scheme to improve the condition of service for the doctors. For me, the security of all doctors and other residents of Rivers State will be paramount so that our economy will be awakened from its slumber.”
Rivers State deputy governorship candidate, Dr  Ipalibo Banigo, a medical doctor and former Secretary to Rivers State Government, urged the doctors to utilize the golden opportunity provided by the PDP to ensure that the comatose health sector in the state is revived.Serving Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Engr Ikuru urged the medical doctors to serve as campaign officials for both President Goodluck Jonathan and Wike, saying that the nation cannot afford to allow the deceit and corruption of the APC to be entrenched.
