NAFDAC arrests Indian for importation of fake products

(Nigeria) The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has arrested an Indian national for importing and distributing fake and unregistered regulated products into Nigeria.
His arrest followed a special raid and enforcement operation in some markets and locations in Port Harcourt Rivers state by the Investigation and Enforcement directorate of the Agency from Lagos.
Addressing journalists after the exercise,the leader of the team,Mr. Folorunso Idowu, a Chief Regulatory Officer, said the Indian who gave his name as Mr Prakarsh Mohinani was arrested along with several cartons of unregistered confectionery worth millions of naira following  a tip-off in one of the hotels in Port Harcourt.
Idowu stressed that the confectionery arrested along with the Indian included products such as "Maliange" mushroom pieces and stems used as spices for delicacies such as fried and jollof rice among others.
He revealed that the team also sealed two other shops that were selling fake and unregistered confectioneries which included the "Maliange" mushroom pieces and stems at the popular Fruits and Vegetables market along Kaduna street, D/Line in Port Harcourt.
The Chief Regulatory Officer further disclosed that the Indian was arrested along with a Nigerian, Mr.Chibuike Onuoha who he alleged distributes for the Indian to other customers in the state.
According to him, the Indian claimed he bought the products from a supermarket in Port Harcourt but could not produce any receipt to back up such a claim nor take them to the shop where he claimed he bought the products when he was requested to so.
Idowu stated that both the Indian and his Nigerian collaborator will be transferred to the Agency’s Lagos office for further investigation since they refused to disclose the source of the products in their possession.
Meanwhile the Chief Regulatory Officer had urged members of the public to report any suspicious character connected to fake and unregistered products to any nearest NAFDAC office to them.
The Indian, Mr Prakarsh Mohinani in his submission said he was a manager of an Indian Restaurant in one of the hotels in Port Harcourt.He stressed that he bought the products from his customer in a supermarket in Port Harcourt refused to make the of customer and the supermarket public.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
