59yrs-old man charged for defiling 8yrs girl

(Nigeria) A 59-year old man, Tajudeen Shoneye, has been charged before a Lagos High Court in Ikeja for allegedly having unlawful canal knowledge of an 8-year old girl.
Shoneye, who resides at No. 21 Badejoko Street, Ikosi area of Ketu in Lagos, was accused to have defiled the teenager on June 15, 2013.
The accused is facing a one-count charge of defilement. But he pleaded not guilty to the charge when it read to him. He is standing trial before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye.
According to the charge:  "Tajudeen Shoneye on June 15, 2013 at No. 21 Badejoko Street, Ketu Lagos, in the Ikeja Judicial Division did defile one (teenager) by having unlawful canal knowledge of her."
The prosecutor, Mr. Akin George, informed the court that the offence was contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Law, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
It was gathered that the teenager, resides at the same street with the defendant and have been allegedly defiled twice at different times.
Meanwhile, further hearing in the matter has been adjourned till March 12 and 13, 2015.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
