AU to approve joint action against Boko Haram

(Nigeria) The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, AUC, Eratus Mwencha on Wednesday said the AU Summit would approve for a joint action of forces to combat the Boko Haram Insurgent ravaging parts of Nigeria’s North East Region.
Mwencha said at a press conference as part of activities to mark the 24th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, with the theme: ``2015 Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063.``
He said there would be a special deliberation on Boko Haram during the Assembly of Heads of State and Government to evolve a mechanism to deal with the Boko Haram that had extentended its attacks to the Neighbouring countries including Cameroon and Chad.
He said the AU Peace and Security Council would convene a special Summit with Boko Haram on top of the agenda to propose for the joint action against the insurgents for the approval of the Assembly.
According to him, Boko Haram has become a global threat that must be tackled globally with Africa taking the lead.
The AU Commission chairperson, Dr Dlamini Zuma, during the opening of the 26th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council on Monday, expressed concern about the growing spate of violence by the terror group in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.
``I am deeply horrified by the tragedy Boko Haram continues to inflict on our people, kidnapping young girls from school, torching villages, terrorising communities and the senseless killings.``
Zuma had called for collective action against the Boko Haram threat to restore peace in the region and the Nigeria as a whole with general elections slated for February.
``What started off as a localised criminal gang is now spreading into West and Central Africa. We must act now, and act collectively against this progressing threat."
Mwencha said that the Commission had accelerated ongoing consultations with member states and other partners on how to deal with Boko Haram, which is on top of the Peace and Security Council during the 24th AU summit scheduled for Thursday, January 29.
