43 killed in Iraq suicide attack

A suspected suicide bomber killed 43 pro-government militiamen in an attack near Baghdad, police said Wednesday, as Islamic State militants shot down a Jordanian fighter jet in neighbouring Syria and captured the pilot.
According to dpa, the attacker blew himself up amid a group of Sahwat (Awakening) militia, who were gathering to collect their salaries at an army outpost in the town of Madain south of Baghdad.
At least 61 were wounded in the attack, one of the deadliest in recent months.
There were no claims of responsibility. Previous attacks, targeting security forces and pro-government militias in Iraq, were claimed by al-Qaeda operatives.
Government troops, backed by a United States-led aerial campaign, have recently stepped up efforts to dislodge Islamic State fighters from territory they control in northern and western Iraq.
The al-Qaeda splinter group also controls considerable territory in neighbouring Syria.
