Female lawyer in court for assaulting colleague

(Nigeria) A 59-year old female lawyer, Nina Lawani, was on Tuesday brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for assaulting her colleague, Mrs Helen Ibeji.
Lawani of No. 6, Shomolu Road, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos State, is facing a charge of assault.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Daniel Ighodalo, told the court that Lawani committed the offence at 11.12a.m., on November 18 at the reception area of the Igbosere Magistrates' Court, Lagos Island.
He said that the accused assaulted Ibeji by slapping her on the face during an argument over a brief.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 170 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The counsel to the accused, Mr Vincent Usman, in his bail application, asked the court to grant Lawani bail on self recognition.
`'I pray that the court should grant the accused bail on self recognition because she is a member of the legal profession who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1991," he said.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.M Ajayi, admonished lawyers describing their behaviour as disgraceful.
``It is very disgraceful for counsel to be fighting. This sort of behaviour brings the legal profession to disrepute," she said.
Ajayi granted Lawani bail on self recognition and adjourned the case to December 18 for mention.
