China votes additional $81m to fight Ebola

China plans to earmark $81 million in aid to Liberia, Guinea and Sierra-Leone to combat the Ebola virus, Secretary General of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping, told Tanzania’s President Jakaya Kikwete at a meeting on Friday during his official visit to Beijing, reports Tass.

“We will provide money and material help and send more experts and physicians to combat the virus. Besides, we are going to build a medical center in Liberia”, he said.
This is the fourth time China provides aid to West African countries to support them in their struggle against the Ebola epidemic. Beijing allocated some $50 million over the last two months to fight the deadly virus. It also provided humanitarian aid, medicine and medical equipment. Moreover, around 200 Chinese specialists are currently working in the epidemic area.
According to the latest reports of the World Health Organization (WHO), the death toll from Ebola virus neared 4,900, while the number of probable and suspected cases is around 10,000, with most of them detected in three West African countries — Liberia, Guinea and Sierra-Leone.

NBC has no powers to impose fine on broadcast stations --Court

(Nigeria) The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has been restrained by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, from imposing fines on broadcast stations in the country. Trial judge in the matter, Justice James Omotosho also set aside the N500,000 fines imposed on March 1, 2019, on each of 45 broadcast stations. The court made the orders in its judgment a suit by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, MRA, which had sued the NBC. Justice Omotosho held that the NBC, not being a court of law, had no power to impose sanctions as punishment on broadcast stations. The court further held that the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which gives the commission the power to impose sanction, is in conflict with Section 6 of the Constitution that vested judicial power in the court of law.
