Pinnick emerges new NFA chairman

(Nigeria) Mr Amaju Pinnick has been elected as the new Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association, NFA, following Tuesday’s board election in Warri, Delta State.
Pinnick emerged after a keenly contested election that also had former NFA secretary-general Taiwo Ogunjobi and former NFA vice chairman Mike Umeh, in the race.
The election, which was held amidst tight security due to a restraining order from a Federal High Court in Jos, saw Pinnick win the contest with 32 votes.
Pinnick polled 25 vote in the first round and 32 votes in the second simple majority to defeat the other five contestants.
Shehu Dikko, a member of the League Management Company, LMC, announced his withdrawal from the race before the commencement of voting.
Other chairmanship candidates, Taiwo Ogunjobi, Dominic Iiorfa, the Vice Chairman of Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi, and a former NFA vice chairman Amanze Uchegbulam polled 13, 14 and four votes, respectively.
Mike Umeh, the immediate past chairman of the NFA, and Abdullahi Abba-Yola did not secure any vote.
The election also saw Seyi Akinwunmi, the Lagos FA Chairman polling 30 votes to defeat Emeka Inyama, Shehu Adamu and Suleiman Muazu for the seat of vice chairman.
Inyama scored 4 votes, while Adamu and Muazu had eight and two votes, respectively.
Ibrahim Gusau, who contested the position of chairman of chairmen was elected unopposed, while Chris Green and Felix Anyansi-Agwu, Chairman of Enyimba FC, Aba, were re-elected into the board.
Green will represent South South on the board after he defeated Oswald Atuake from Cross Rivers by 26 votes, while Anyansi-Agwu dusted three other candidates to emerge from the South East.
Others who were elected to the board included Sunday Ajayi for the South-West; Sharif Inuwa for the North-West, while Kachalla Kalli and Modibbo Hussaini emerged from the North-East zone.
In a remark on behalf of the board, Pinnick said the executive committee would run an open-door policy.
``We are going to be taking collective football decision; we will redefine and reposition Nigeria's football. It is a task that saw my predecessor winning almost every laurel but we will improve on that. With this team, we are going to reposition the football and take it to the next level,'' Pinnick said.
