Only 1 person on treatment over Ebola in Nigeria - Minister

(Nigeria) The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said only one of Ebola virus patients was receiving treatment and that seven had been discharged in the country.
Chukwu gave this update on the status of confirmed patients with the virus to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said two of the treated patients were discharged on Monday evening and were now very free of the disease.
Chukwu debunked the rumour that Dr Ameyo Adadevoh’s younger sister had been confirmed to having contracted the disease, stressing that she tested negative.
``As at today, August 26, 2014, Nigeria has had 13 cases of Ebola disease, including the index case. Out of these 13, five, including the index case, unfortunately died. However, seven of the infected persons were successfully managed at the isolation ward in Lagos and have been discharged.
``As I speak to you, Nigeria has only one confirmed case of Ebola virus, a secondary contact of Mr Patrick Sawyer and spouse of one of the physicians who participated in the management of the index case’’, he said.
Chukwu added that all the reported cases of the Ebola virus in the country had their root in the index case.
He said 129 people who were under surveillance had completed their 21 days and were now free. ``However, 128 people are still under surveillance.’’
The minister said so far, Nigeria had been able to contain the outbreak of the disease.
Chukwu reassured Nigerians and the global community that Government would remain vigilant and not relent in its efforts to ensure that the disease was kept out of the country.
He assured that the fund allocated for the treatment of the disease would be judiciously utilised for the fight against the disease even after containing it.
Chukwu said the fund would be used to procure more vehicles, protective equipment for personnel and drugs to support treatment, among others.
Mr Olisa Metuh, National Publicity Secretary of PDP, who donated N1 million, urged Nigerian philanthropists to follow suit for the sake of the country.
Mr Labaran Maku, the Minister of Information, urged Nigerians to continue to observe and maintain good hygiene practices in the effort to check the spread of the disease.
