NDLEA arrests 73 drug suspects in Niger

(Nigeria) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA in Niger State said on Wednesday that it arrested 73 drug suspects in the state between January and June 24.
The state Commander of the agency, Mr Abdullahi Abdul, disclosed this at a news conference in Minna to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking.
He said that of the number,71 were males and while two were females.
Abdul said the agency made a total seizure of 1.1 tonnes of hard drugs.
He said the command also seized 927.50 kilogramme of Indian hemp (cannabis sativa) and 180.90 kilogramme of other psychotropic substances.
He said of the 927.50 kilograms of cannabis sativa, there was a singular seizure of 627 kilogramme of cannabis along Lagos-Kontagora road in April this year that was being transported to Sokoto state.
He said the command secured the conviction of 16 male suspects that were sentenced to various jail terms at the Federal High Court, Minna, while the remaining cases are at various stages of prosecution at the court.
The commander said 13 persons with cases of drug related health problems were admitted by the agency within the period on Demand Reduction Angle for counselling, treatment and rehabilitation.
He urged parents to advise their wards to stay away from illicit drugs and engage in meaningful activities that would benefit them in future.
Abdul pledged the command’s resolve to eradicate the use of illicit drugs in the state.
